On Configuration, Sam is joined by a group of European musicians for an amazing album. Tony Hymas is best known in the US for his work with Jeff Beck (Guitar Shop), but is a prominent figure in Europe as a composer and performer. The rest of the ensemble is comprised of Noel Akchote, Paul Rogers and Jacques Thollot. These musicians are prominent on the European Jazz and Improvisational music scene.

Configuration works well as an introduction to Sam Rivers on many levels, showcasing his tenor and soprano sax as well as his flute playing. An album which can be enjoyed by listeners new to Sam Rivers, "free jazz", as well as long time fans of this legendary figure in modern jazz.
